Use a wall for added variety
A nice little variation that I used in last nights class was to add a wall into the training!
We were learning and practising defending front chokes and after running through the standard variation from a standing and pushing positions, I had the students practice defending the front choke while being held up against a wall.
Although this only made a slight difference to the technique used for defending (mainly thelack
of leaning back while ‘plucking’ the opponents wrists) it was enough of a variation to keep things interesting.
The students either performed a standard type of defence from this position or as a variation used the wall to slam the attacker into after escaping from the choke hold.
Check out the video of a drill similar here

I am part owner of a school in St. Louis and am looking for a brown belt or better to train with so I may qualify for the three day instructor class. Sure could use some help.

Push someone into a wall with a dynamic (i.e. pushing the victim) choke
Do the above and the static choke from all sides (i.e. have the ‘victim’ face the wall, be sideways to it, and with his/her back to it).
Do this using a chair, with chokes from all sides.
Do the choke from behing with a chair and a table (even harder to get up like that). Do the choke from the front sitting at a table.
Find some cars, practice on getting into your car and being choked. Do the side choke when sitting in the car (both someone choking you from outside of the car and sitting on the passenger seat next to you).
Go into the (small) locker room or the bathroom with the whole class and then do the chokes with everyone bunched together.

Thanks Johnny. Some excellent tips and choke variations. I’ll make sure to try them in a class real soon.
