Which Krav Maga ClubThe truth is that Krav Maga has been proliferated considerably over the last 10 years, everywhere you see advertisements about this and that Krav Maga association / federation school or whatever, this person or that person claims to have founded Krav Maga and was a captain, colonel, commander in some Israeli special force, most of these claims have never been and will never be substantiated. In an article in a UK newspaper one association had to change its advertising because of unsubstantiated claims.

So, how do you know which club or school to go to? Imi Lichtenfeld is the undoubted pioneer of Krav Maga, his closest, most senior (and last) student was Eyal Yanilov, pure Krav Maga lineage should arguably come from Eyal Down. In the US as far as we know, their Lineage comes down this line too, Darren Lavine & John Whitman were at one point closely connected with Imi and Eyal. Instructors taught by these people (Eyal, John & Darren) are usually high level and teach genuine Krav Maga.

I have trained with Eyal, also with Darren and John in Belgium and can say that the techniques were logical, well delivered and virtually identical.

Next, visit some clubs, look at what they are teaching, how well demonstrated are the techniques? How is the instructor interacting with the students? What is the atmosphere like and most importantly, does it look logical? If the instructor is teaching spinning hook kicks, it probably isn’t genuine Krav Maga!
